BACKGROUND:

Atton is from the Star Wars universe. Here’s some light reading regarding that world.
Star Wars: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars
Knights of the Old Republic I: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic
Knights of the Old Republic II: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic_II:_The_Sith_Lords

His specific history isn’t that well outlined, so it’s written out below.

Nothing is known of Atton Rand’s youth and childhood. It’s implied he’s from a world that was directly affected by the Mandalorian invasion of the Republic, and his talent for smuggling would support his origin being from somewhere in the Outer Rim of the galaxy. He has no living family or, by all indication, remaining friends from his past. Even his full original name is left only to headcanon. We only know that once the man named ‘Jaq,’ who would one day become Atton Rand, joined the Republic Military to fight against the Mandalorians during the Mandalorian War.

He served well if not with distinction, until the day came that Revan cast aside the Jedi order and became Lord of the Sith, completing this betrayal by declaring war on the Jedi and the Republic itself. Jaq believed his loyalty lay with Revan, who had been the deciding factor in the war that saved the Republic from the Mandalorians, and chose to defect to this side and join the Sith army rather than remain with the Jedi controlled Republic forces and fight his idol. Over time Jaq’s skills were honed into that of an assassin, with his specialization being in the capture and torture- or, if capture wasn’t possible, outright murder- of Jedi prisoners (along, of course, with anyone else who got in his way). He became part of an elite force that was trained how to deceive Jedi and other mindreaders, something Jaq had an exceptional talent at.

He remained an assassin until one day, towards the end of the Jedi Civil War, a female Jedi willingly came to him. She claimed to have received a vision from the Force to find him and save him and- in her last moments as he choked the life out of her- showed him why he was so good at his job: Jaq was a force sensitive himself. Able to see the pain and harm he was causing the galaxy with the force now awakened in him, Jaq made the last murder he would perform as a sith and killed the Jedi that had come to save him. Aware that all force sensitives in the Sith ranks were rounded up to be broken into dark Jedi or worse, and with the scars of the woman who died for him still fresh on his soul, Jaq did what he’d soon become very skilled at and ran away from his problems. He ditched the Sith and fled to the crime world of Nar Shaddaa where he changed his name, his history, everything, until he was Atton Rand, a simple drug smuggler and gambling scoundrel with no stake in any kind of ideology or government.

In the year 3,951 (the start of KOTOR II), a female Jedi once more utterly changed the life of Atton Rand. He was stranded on the fuel mining station of Peragus- abandoned by his crew for taking too long when he was arrested by station security while smuggling drugs- when a Jedi was found and captured by the station workers. Jedi, now a rarity following the Civil War and the recent return of the Sith following the events of KOTOR I, were worth a large bounty on the black market, leading to various factions fighting over who would sell her off until the entire station lay dead or dying. Long story short, Atton, the Jedi Exile, and the creepy old woman that would (at the dramatic end game reveal) turn out to be a Lord of the Sith, escaped the station and set forth on the Hero’s Journey for the Exile.

Atton served as: the pilot of the ship, semi-romantic interest, and general skeptical Debbie Downer for the many, many missions and side-quests that come with a RPG game. He also spent most of that time trying to hide his horrible, dark past from the Exile he very quickly comes to worship. Eventually, as happens with nearly every crew member, the Exile character discovered Atton is force sensitive, got his tragic past out of him, and then began to train him in the ways of the Jedi. Older, bitter, and emotionally scarred, Jedi-ness isn’t something Atton takes to like a fish to water, but he muddles along well enough.

As an additional note, the history I will be using is all from these two games. No extended universe info from comics/books or the Old Republic MMO will be used.

PERSONALITY:

Atton projects the the personality of the typical devil-may-care pilot and scoundrel. His self described favorite activities are: drinking, gambling, women, and running, though he’s also pretty handy with a blaster when things get rough. He tries very hard to make it clear that he doesn’t care for much of anyone or anything outside of himself, and that his own preservation is his first priority. He handles the outside world with sarcasm, blowing most things off and commenting on most of the events around him with dark humor. He deals with people through jokes or flirtation, depending on the gender, and will often be lewd even at people he is in no way attracted to simply to enforce the idea that he’s nothing but a lowlife smuggler.

In some ways, all of the above are true. Atton is a scoundrel and views the world as such. He is also very fond of his vices, enjoying indulging in alcohol, women, and gambling even if, most times, these activities are simply part of a front. He is, however, no where near the level of simple minded and easily sated that he likes to project. Atton, at his core, is very conflicted between the man that he was, the man that he is, and the man that he wants to be. Previously, Atton was a force sensitive Sith assassin, channeling all his hurt and anger about the Jedi Council’s apparent abandonment of the galaxy towards hunting down and corrupting those same Jedi in the name of the Sith Lord Revan. Atton, or Jaq as he was known during that time period, only escaped becoming a full fledged dark Jedi, and therefore a slave to Revan, through one selfless Jedi that allowed herself to be killed in order to save him. Since leaving the Sith, every step that he has taken and choice he has made has been in the shadow of both his past actions and that Jedi’s sacrifice. He longs to redeem himself, seeking to be trusted by others and found worthy of their cause, but in his heart does not believe himself worthy of that redemption. Atton despises himself for what he once was, but at the same time will defend every step he took and decision he made during that part of his life. For all that he regrets, Atton cannot see another path that his life could have taken. Revan saved the Republic, and so Atton was loyal to Revan. There is still a not-so-insignificant part of Atton that is near mindlessly loyal to Revan and believes in all the Sith have done in order to save the galaxy, and that is a part that terrifies him.

This hurricane of conflicting emotions causes Atton to be incredibly defensive. He does not like the idea of people getting through his walls and seeing the darkness within. As much as he longs to be accepted, he fears being rejected even more. This often causes him to lash out at anyone who attempts to get too close to seeing the real him rather than simply accepting the glib front he projects. To further this, he still utilizes the mental walls he perfected as an assassin, projecting strong, base emotions such a lust or greed while simultaneously doing a monotonous task in his mind, such as counting cards, so that anyone scanning his surface thoughts will just overlook him. The only person who has been able to get through that armor so far has been the Jedi Exile, and that took a hell of a lot of work. With this one exception, Atton puts a huge amount of effort into maintaining his sarcastic, vice driven scoundrel persona and keeping people from noticing anything beneath the surface. He still wants to be trusted, however, and will often reward people who demonstrate faith in him and his abilities with his loyalty. However, he doesn’t have much an idea of how to handle compliments and the like, meaning that at the time such faith is shown in him he’ll usually respond by being sarcastic or, on the very rare occasion, stumbling over his words.

After being burned so many times in the past when he’s followed a cause, Atton finds it hard to believe in much of anything. Once he finds a cause that speaks to him, however, Atton is loyal to it to the point of fanaticism. First the Republic, then Revan, and then the Exile have all earned this loyalty, and Atton was prepared to lay down his life for each of them. More than that, Atton is willing to give everything and anything of himself for this cause, down to his very soul. Though he has become a member of the light-side of the Force under the Exile, this state is an admittedly tenuous thing. He has the potentially to fall back into the ways of the Sith for whatever cause speaks to him next. Atton is akin to an addict when it comes to his following a cause: he isn’t able to do things halfway.

POWER:
I’m going to group all of Atton’s powers under the umbrella of ‘the force’

Atton has been trained as a Jedi Sentinel, a Jedi that balances Force use with martial prowess. Though he has only been in training for a few months, he is rather skilled with the basic neutral and light-side techniques. He is nearly a master when it comes to creating mind shields, thanks to his previous assassin work where he perfected it before even knowing he had the Force. This means it is very difficult for telepathic characters to dig beneath his surface thoughts.

A full list of the description of Force powers can be found below, keeping in mind that Atton is still a novice in the Force. He will need to train on his own/with help after that to become more skilled. Notably, he only has access to the Light-side/universal powers on the list at the present time. Should Atton stray to the dark side while in game, he will naturally lose access to ‘light side’ powers and gain access to ‘dark side’ powers instead.

Force users are also trained to be resistant to poisons, with much higher doses being required to affect them. They can further survive periods of oxygen deprivation that would kill a normal human.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[For the first few moments, the camera is focused very clearly on an empty mug, with a blurry outline of a pale arm laying across a table and the general hussle and bussle of a bar behind it.]

Well isn’t this just...Oh, frack.

[The arm moves to reposition the camera, bringing the man’s shoulders and head into shaky focus. The bloodshot eyes and slightly slurred voice make it pretty clear just what had been in that mug up until a minute ago.]

Isn’t this just a big fracking pile of...of...It’s just one thing, ya know? One little itty bitty tiny favor I ask from the universe. That’s it. You know what that is? Huh? That only thing I ever wanted outta life? For people to fripping leave me alone. That’s it. To just keep your problems out there, an’ leave mine over here.

[He gestures viciously towards his temple, knocking over the mug in the processes. He pauses for a moment, slowly looking down at the small mess it left behind.]

Sure. That’s right...but, I’m not done drinking. So, once-a-millennium special, tonight. I’m buying. Better move it before I use up all my leftover generous nature.
